The Gift

If you could wish for one gift this Christmas, what would it be?

I've waited forever to read the latest work by Cecelia Ahern, titled The Gift ever since I caught sight of it in a bookstore. But the books were always wrapped up because they were so expensive and the only giveaway on what The Gift is all about is the above phrase. So all I know is, it's set during the Christmas season. But who cares? After reading two of her books - P.S. I Love You and Love, Rosie which is also known as Where Rainbows End (don't ask me why there's two titles, coz I don't know either), I've fallen in love with her novels.

How did I get this book? Earlier this month, a FedEx delivery van suddenly appeared in front of my house and the delivery man asked for Amanda Soo (yes, me). Of course I was surprised that my name was on the parcel. I signed the paper, thanked the man, and then my imagination started running wild. My first thought was maybe I just won one million ringgit from some competition I did not remember joining. Hah! How cool is that?! Okay, fine. That's impossible. How could someone forget about joining a contest that could amount to a one million ringgit cash prize? So maybe I got lucky in some lucky draws that I did not know of. Nah. Then it finally dawned on me. I really could not recall joining any contest or buy anything online. How could I receive a parcel out of nowhere? Oh my gosh it must had been a bomb threat! Somebody wanted me dead!

To reassure myself I tore open the package and...thank God! It's just a book. Okay, it's not just a book, it's The Gift! I was so relieved, happy, surprised and confused all at the same time. I saw a receipt from mphonline.com. So, this book was bought online, I thought. Then everything finally made sense to me. It's my big sis! She was there with me the first time I saw this book in the bookstore. We both wanted it and she had promised that she would buy the book, but I just didn't expect it to come through mail. I was so touched and happy and grateful. I still am okay! So thanks again, sis! =D

Anyway, The Gift is about a successful career man by the name Lou Suffern who is constantly on the go. He is always rushing from one place to another. He is married to his beautiful wife with two healthy children and lives in a big house, but he always put his work before his family. One day, Lou meets Gabe, a homeless guy who sits outside Lou's office and observes everything that passes by. After getting to know Gabe, Lou is intrigued by this mysterious man, even a little fearful of him. Gabe starts to affect Lou's life in ways that Lou will never imagine, teaching him the value of family and time.

I'm not going to go down with all the details because if you really are interested then you will buy the book. LOL. As tempting as it was, I didn't read it until during the CNY holidays. And I've finished it. The verdict? I love it. Cecelia Ahern has a way of writing that just grips people. Every time I get started on one of her books, I just can't seem to put it back down until I've read the very last page. The Gift is yet another page-turner, inspiring, heartbreaking and very funny. She describes the characters and situations beautifully, just like in her other novels. I love the way she penned down the dialogues between the characters and yes, you can definitely see Lou slowly tranform into a different man, which I like. The Gift is not as thick as her other novels though, so it takes a pretty short time to finish the book, maybe too short. So for those of you who want a little light reading or some inspiration, read The Gift. You won't regret it.
